Iceland is not in the European Union, but is a part of the European Economic Area. As such, while having little voice in the crafting of EU laws and regulations, the country is bound to implement them. This includes the implementation of the new bottle cap regulation.

Minister of the Environment, Energy and Climate Jóhann Páll Jóhannsson spoke in favour of the new regulation in Parliament yesterday, Vísir reports. He argued that most consumers will feel absolutely no difference once Iceland implements the regulation because most beverage manufacturers in the country have already put it into practice.

He added that while 94% of all drink bottles produced in Iceland have attached bottle caps already, the remaining 6% comprises some three million bottles.
