Niemiecki fizyk Wilhelm Röntgen odkrył nowy rodzaj promieniowania w 1895 roku. Nazwał je promieniowaniem X (x-ray), ponieważ nie wiedział czym jest.

Nazwa pierwiastka Hel / Helium pochodzi od Helios (słońce po grecku), bo najpierw go wykryliśmy na nim.
