To accomplish the load reduction PMS performs the following functions:
• The Power Management System monitors the load and frequency on each busbar as well as the load on each individual Main Generator Engine.
• The PMS will calculate the available power for drilling (15% of available power on net + consumed power of drilling equipment). The power available signal to the Drilling will be limited so that the drilling plant can take only 15% of the present available power on the net additionally.
• In case of the load on any MGE exceeds 100%, the RPM setting to the thrusters which are fed by the corresponding MGE, will be automatically reduced. The reduction is a function of the overload and the RPM set point will integrate to the external set point when the overload is recovered.
• In case of the load on any switchboard exceeds 100%, the RPM setting to the thrusters which are fed by the corresponding switchboard, will be automatically reduced. The reduction is a function of the overload and the RPM set point will integrate to the external set point when the overload is recovered.
• In case of the low frequency (less than 58Hz) on any switchboard, the RPM setting to the thrusters fed by the corresponding switchboard will be automatically reduced. The reduction is a function of the overload and the RPM set point will integrate to the external set point when the low frequency is recovered.
• In case of overload or frequency drop, the PMS will immediately add one generator to the switchboard.
• If the frequency falls below 55 Hz for more than 3.0 seconds, the PMS will trip the bus tiebreakers if they are in the closed position.
• PMS compares, each scan time (< 100 ms), the power available on the board vs the power used signals from the consumer. Should the power used exceed the power available signal, PMS will reduce the Power available (Limit) Signal to Drilling Power limiting system (DPLS) at 90%, to the ABB thrusters VFD at 100%.
• Drilling Power limiting system (DPLS) will respond to 90% power limit signal and will reduce the power demand until the overload is rectified.
• ABB thrusters VFD will respond to 100% power limit signal and will phase back the thrusters, following power available (limit) signal (4-20mA) until the overload is rectified.
